Select the correct measurement set

The selector requests different dimensions for cartridges, stems, aerators, hoses, and handles. Choose the component first so a diameter or length is not compared with an unrelated feature.

Use repeatable endpoints

Place the tool on the same shoulders, faces, or tips shown in the candidate diagram. State whether seals, adapters, screws, and moving stems are included in the reading.

Choose a suitable instrument

A ruler is useful for scale and broad lengths; calipers are better for close diameters and shoulders. A thread-pitch gauge is appropriate for pitch. Do not infer precision beyond the instrument or the condition of a worn part.

Enter and convert values carefully

Keep the original reading and unit. If conversion is needed, use 25.4 millimeters per inch and avoid rounding until comparison is complete. Fractions shown in retail descriptions may be nominal rather than exact measured sizes.

Understand tolerance and wear

Deposits can enlarge a surface and abrasion can reduce it. Flexible seals compress. A small numerical difference is therefore interpreted with the measurement method, uncertainty, and feature type—not automatically accepted or rejected.

Combine dimensions with other evidence

After the dimensional shortlist, compare markings, retainer, ports, tabs, threads, seals, and source-backed applications. Stop when a critical feature conflicts even if the headline dimensions match.

How close is close enough?

There is no single tolerance for every feature. Consider instrument accuracy, wear, deposits, and the candidate's documented dimension and function.

Can measurements prove compatibility?

They can strongly narrow or exclude candidates, but application, ports, retention, seals, and operation must also agree.
