Describe the faucet
Record whether the stem serves hot, cold, or a diverter and whether the fixture is a sink, tub, or wall-mounted faucet. The same-looking stem may be configured differently by side or application.
Identify the operating style
A compression stem typically moves a washer toward a seat through multiple turns. A ceramic stem commonly uses limited rotation, but the actual construction and manufacturer documentation should decide the category.

Compare the handle broach
Count clearly defined splines and measure the broach diameter with calipers. A spline count alone does not establish fit because diameter, depth, adapter use, and indexing may differ.
Measure threads and body
Record overall length using explicit endpoints, body diameter, thread major diameter, and the distance from the mounting shoulder to the handle end. Thread pitch should be checked with a gauge or a reliable documented specification rather than guessed from a photograph.
Check sealing and rotation
Compare washers, O-rings, ceramic openings, shoulders, and the seat interface. For limited-turn stems, confirm which direction opens the hot and cold sides so the handles operate correctly.
Use the shortlist safely
Reject any candidate that conflicts on threads, shoulder, seals, or application even if the handle fits. Reinstall only according to the fixture maker's procedure and stop if the valve body shifts, threads bind, or a seat is damaged.

Is spline count enough to identify a stem?
No. Broach diameter, body threads, length, seals, direction, and application also need to agree.
Can I reuse the old washer?
Keep it for identification, but follow the documented repair procedure and use the specified sealing components for installation.
What if the replacement threads start but become tight?
Stop. Cross-threading or a different thread can damage the valve; compare specifications rather than applying more force.
