Describe the shower control
Tell the selector whether one control sets both flow and temperature, separate controls perform those jobs, or the fixture uses multiple handles. Note any separate diverter or transfer control so its cartridge is not confused with the mixing cartridge.
Capture markings and orientation
Record molded, etched, or stamped text before cleaning removes contrast. Mark which end faced the handle and where any hot-side indicator, tab, or stop sat.

Compare retention and body features
The way the cartridge is held in the valve is an important discriminator. Compare the clip groove, bonnet threads, flange, locating ears, inlet windows, outlet paths, and seal locations rather than relying on body color.

Measure without changing the evidence
Photograph the intact assembly first. Measure overall length, maximum body diameter, and stem dimensions only at clearly repeatable points; do not include a loose adapter unless the comparison source does.

Read shortlist confidence
A candidate is stronger when its documented valve application, retainer, geometry, and measurements all agree. A shared color, cap shape, or spline is insufficient when another decisive feature conflicts.

Shut off the water, open the control to verify pressure is relieved, and protect the drain. Use the maker's service procedure when available; stop if extraction bends piping, rotates the rough-in valve, or requires force you cannot control.

Can I identify the cartridge without removing it?
Trim and valve behavior may narrow the family, but physical markings and geometry often require access or removal after a safe shutoff.
Does the same brand mean the same cartridge?
No. Brands use multiple valve platforms and revisions, so the documented application and physical checks still matter.
Why does a new cartridge still not fit?
A near-looking cartridge may use different tabs, ports, seals, or a different valve generation. Do not modify or force it.
